January 24, 2012 – Nine students, accompanied by their teacher, Anne Swanson, from the Scottish Agricultural College paid a visit to Newton of Millfield Farm to learn about Low Stress Livestock Management and to see and discuss cattle genetics. Discussion of the effects and use of selective genetics of Starburst – Standard Pedigree Herefords and Pedigree Shorthorns and Starburst Pedigree Miniature Herefords where demonstrated, which sparked much interest and discussion.
Norgrass Bale Silage Winner 2011
Andrew Bayliss won the Norgrass Bale silage competition for 2011 for the North East of Scotland at his organic farm at Newton of Millfield Farm near Turriff, Aberdeenshire. He was runner up in 2010 and won it in 2009. The consistent top standings of good quality silage resulted in a centerfold feature article Grass/Silage supplement, pages 8 and 9 by Patsy Hunter in the March 12, 2011 edition of The Scottish Farmer. This top quality silage is used on farm as feed for the organic Shorthorn cross commercial cattle and the organic Pedigree Herefords currently being raised on the Bayliss farm.
